How to choose the right coach/mentor?

Mar 11, 2018

Congratulations for even opening this article!

There are a lot of people who are not even contemplating having a coach or a mentor, so congrats again.

It takes a certain level of humbleness to investigate into getting a coach or mentor.

Humbleness is the realization that there is something that you don’t know or something you are able to do by yourself and there is someone out there who can help you.

I can assure you that whatever challenge you are facing, there is someone out there who can help you. Life is just too short to struggle trying to figure it out by yourself.

Many people are realising that the successful people that they see all had a coach or a mentor, well most of them anyway. This is very evident in the sports and it is now being transferred to other aspects of life, career and business.

At the same time, many people are seeing the great opportunity there is in coaching as a lifestyle career. Once you have an internet connection or even a phone connection you can coach from anywhere in the world. So there are a lot of people now pursuing coaching as a career. Seeing this trend, many educational and training institutions are creating coaching programs. This has translated into coaching becoming one of the fastest growing professions in the world.

So how do you choose a coach or mentor from the thousands that are out there?

My top recommendation would be to find a coach or a mentor who has either accomplished what you are trying to accomplish or has helped other people accomplish the same thing. While some of the early coaching theory has suggested that once you have a proper coaching process who can coaching in any area of life, career and business, I do not agree with that. Not because someone has a coaching certificate means that they can coach you to the success that you aim to achieve. The current coaching education and certification process is highly unregulated so be careful in choosing the right coach or mentor for you.
My next criterion is a bit difficult to judge at the start but referrals and testimonials can help. You need a coach who is genuinely interested in your success at a level beyond a client coach relationship. Over the years I have invested heavily in coaching and mentoring. My worst experience was actually with one of the world’s top rated coaching and personal development institutions. I felt like I was just a number in their system. I did not feel like my coach had a vested interest in my success. If I slipped and did not book a coaching call it would be months before the system picks it up and sends an automatically generated email pretending to care about my success and how long they did not hear from me. If I slip I expect my coach to pick up the phone and call me, isn’t that what coaching supposed to be about? I know my current mentor, Camilita Nuttall is vested in my success and she often gives me a kick up the assets when I am not doing what I should be doing.
The third most important criterion in my opinion is who is the coach’s coach or the mentor’s mentor. If your coach really believes in coaching and mentoring and they know that they don’t know everything and they still need to continuously grow then they will have a coach or a mentor. Additionally, the quality and accomplishments of the coach’s coach is also critically important. My current mentor is mentored by Sharon Lechter who has built the largest financial education brand in the world, has sold over 30 million books and worked with the Bush and Obama administrations. So by extension I know that my mentor/coach is giving me some first class guidance and by further extension my clients will also get first class guidance.
I would also highly recommend that you have a conversation with your potential coach or mentor and just see if you are able to build rapport with the person.

I would love to work with you to help you achieve your goals and highest potential and remove the blocks that are keeping you back.

My clients have had tremendous success from working with me and I would love to give you the opportunity to get the same results. See my clients’ testimonials here.
